Our promise
What information do we collect?
We collect information from you when you register in our apps or on our site, subscribe to our newsletter or anonymous app usage information.
You may visit our site or use our apps anonymously. You are not required to give us your email address to use our apps.
When something goes wrong in the Topo Maps+ web app, an error report is sent to our crash-reporting service, Bugsnag, so we can find and fix the problem. It includes technical details about the error and your browser, and your Topo Maps+ account ID if you’re signed in.
1. If you don’t have a Topo Maps+ account.
- All of your recorded GPS data stays on your device and is never transmitted to our servers.
- If you make a purchase, there is an anonymous record of your purchase on our servers.
2. If you do have a Topo Maps+ account.
- Your email address is stored on our servers.
- To create a Topo Maps+ account you must provide an email address.
- To have a more personalized experience, you can optionally store your name and photo. This information is not required.
- Your recorded tracks, routes, waypoints, regions, folders, notes, photos, data layers, imported maps, and purchases are synced to our service and transmitted using industry best practices for encryption. This information is stored on our servers so that you can use it on all of your devices.
- The data on our servers is not publicly available, with three exceptions. Anything you share with a share link can be seen by anyone who has that link. Photos you add to waypoints, and the preview image of a map you import, are stored at unlisted web addresses that anyone who has the exact address can open; those addresses are never published.
- If you allow notifications, your device’s notification token is stored so we can send the notifications you turn on, such as team alerts.
- If you sign in with CartoTracks or link a CartoTracks account, we receive what we need from CartoTracks to sign you in and to show the CartoTracks maps you own in Topo Maps+.
- If you are a member of a team, data you create while working in that team belongs to the team, and everyone on that team can see it. You choose which team you are working in, and you can switch back to your own data at any time. Switching does not move data that already exists — anything you created in your own account stays yours, and anything created in a team stays with the team.
- When you start recording a track while working in a team, the app asks whether to save it to the team or keep it in your own account.
- Data in your own account is not available to other Topo Maps+ users.
What do we use your information for?
Any of the information we collect from you may be used in one of the following ways:
- To personalize your experience (your information helps us to better respond to your individual needs)
- To improve our website or apps (we continually strive to improve our apps and website offerings based on the information and feedback we receive from you)
- To improve customer service (your information helps us to more effectively respond to your customer service requests and support needs)
- To sync data between your devices (you can choose to sync your data between your devices — to make this happen, your data is saved on our servers)
- To send periodic emails
The email address you provide for order processing may be used to send you information and updates pertaining to your order, in addition to receiving occasional company news, updates, related product or service information, etc.
Do we track your position with GPS?
Our apps only track your position with GPS with your consent when you choose to turn on GPS and explicitly give our apps permission to use GPS data. The GPS data is not saved, stored, or transmitted unless you explicitly choose to record a trip or share your live location with a team. When you sync your data between your devices any recorded trip data is sync’d with our servers. We do not use this data in any way to track you or to identify you. It only exists on our servers so that you can access it from any of your devices, and so that members of a team can see trips saved to that team. If you never record a trip or share your live location, then your GPS data is never saved, stored, or transmitted.
If you choose to share your live location with a team, your current position is sent to our servers so other members of that team can see it. You can also choose to share the track you are recording along with it. You control when this starts and stops, and when you stop, your position is removed from our servers.
AI assistants (coming soon, and only if you connect one)
Connecting Topo Maps+ to an AI assistant is coming soon. This section applies only if you choose to connect your Topo Maps+ account to an AI assistant, such as ChatGPT or Claude. If you never connect an assistant, none of it applies to you: no Topo Maps+ data is shared with any AI service, and nothing described here happens.
Connecting and disconnecting
- An assistant can reach your account only after you add Topo Maps+ in the assistant, sign in to Topo Maps+, and approve the permissions it asks for: viewing your data, and, if you allow it, adding to and changing it.
- You can disconnect at any time in the Topo Maps+ web app under Account → Connected Apps. The assistant loses access right away.
What the assistant can see and do
- Your waypoints, routes, tracks, regions, folders, data layers, track groups, and the data of teams you belong to, as your team role allows. It reads them only when it uses Topo Maps+ in a conversation with you.
- It can’t see where your device is right now, including any live location you share with a team.
- Before it changes anything, it shows you exactly what will change and asks for your OK. Deleted items aren’t erased and can be restored, and changes to existing items can be undone for 90 days.
- Requests it sends to your Topo Maps+ app, such as a map download or a settings change, appear as a notification and do nothing until you confirm them in the app.
Where your data goes
- When the assistant reads your Topo Maps+ data to answer you, that data becomes part of your conversation with the assistant, so it is sent to the company that runs the assistant (for example, OpenAI for ChatGPT or Anthropic for Claude). From then on it is handled under that company’s privacy policy and your settings with them. We don’t control how they store or use your conversations.
- We don’t sell your data or use it to train AI models, and we never send your data to an AI provider you haven’t connected.
- Place searches and route creation done through the assistant are handled by Topo Maps+’s own search and routing service, not a third party. We don’t keep the search text, locations, or route points from those requests.
What we keep because you connected
- A record of each connection: which assistant, the permissions you approved, when it was last used, and when you disconnected. The sign-in tokens an assistant uses are stored in a form that can’t be read back, and they expire on their own.
- Unsaved trip plans (drafts) the assistant makes for you are deleted 30 days after their last change. They become part of your data only if you save them.
- The record of changes the assistant made, kept so they can be undone, is deleted after 90 days.
- PDF maps it makes for you are deleted after 7 days. Their download links stop working after 24 hours.
- Requests it sends to your Topo Maps+ app expire after a set time (at most 30 days) and are deleted within 90 days after that. Files you give it to import are deleted about a day after you upload them.
- We note on your account, and in the service we use to send email, which assistants you have connected and when one was last used. We use this to understand how the feature is used and to send relevant tips; you can unsubscribe from those emails at any time.
How do we protect your information?
We implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your personal information when you enter, submit, or access your personal information.
We offer the use of a secure server. All supplied sensitive information is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), and is accessible only to those authorized with special access rights to such systems, who are required to keep the information confidential.
Do we use cookies?
We do not set advertising or cross-site tracking cookies anywhere. The Topo Maps+ web app at maps.topomaps.co keeps you signed in and remembers your preferences using your browser’s local storage rather than cookies.
Our support chat widget — provided by Help Scout — runs on topomaps.co. When you open it, it stores a small identifier in your browser so your support conversation stays continuous. It is used only to power support, not for advertising or tracking, and is governed by Help Scout’s privacy policy.
Cookies do come into play in one place: payments. When you start or manage a subscription, you are taken to our payment processor, Stripe, which sets its own essential cookies on its secure checkout pages to process the transaction and help prevent fraud. Those cookies are set by Stripe and governed by Stripe’s privacy policy. We also use privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics to understand performance and usage in aggregate.
Do we disclose any information to outside parties?
We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your personally identifiable information. This does not include trusted third parties who assist us in operating our website and apps, conducting our business, or servicing you, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release your information when we believe release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect ours or others rights, property, or safety. However, non-personally identifiable visitor information may be provided to other parties for marketing, advertising, or other uses.
If you connect an AI assistant to your account, the data it reads for you is sent to the company that runs that assistant, because you connected it and asked. See “AI assistants (coming soon, and only if you connect one)” above. If you don’t connect one, this never happens.
California Online Privacy Protection Act Compliance
Because we value your privacy we have taken the necessary precautions to be in compliance with the California Online Privacy Protection Act. We therefore will not distribute your personal information to outside parties without your consent.
Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act Compliance
We are in compliance with the requirements of COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), we do not collect any information from anyone under 13 years of age. Our website, products and services are all directed to people who are at least 13 years old or older.
Deleting your account
You can delete your Topo Maps+ account at any time: in the Topo Maps+ app under My Account → Delete Account, or in the web app under Account → Delete My Account. This deletes your account and the data stored with it on our servers. Data you created while working in a team belongs to the team and stays with it.
If you can’t sign in, email support@topomaps.co and we’ll delete it for you.
Your Consent
By using our site or apps, you consent to our privacy policy.
